Property & Support
When a marital relationship splits up, decisions must be made about:
- What is joint (marital) property, and what is separate?
- How can the property be divided fairly?
- Has one partner been out of the workforce, or their earning ability reduced, so that it would be appropriate to have the other pay spousal support (alimony)?
Keeping in mind that it is always more expensive to maintain two households than to maintain one, no-one may feel like they "won", but I am concerned with making sure there are no losers. In mediation, we look in detail at finances, assets and budgets. We work to come up with a division of assets and a support amount that both of you feel is fair.
